Advent Calendar Day 7: Praying and Preaching on Modern Slavery

Yesterday at the Chesterfield Modern Slavery Conference, we launched some Resources for Prayer, Preaching and reflection on Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery.

The conference reminded me of some horrifying statistics:
  • Modern Slavery is the second most profitable criminal industry in the world today
  • It is also one with far fewer risks to the criminal
  • There are more slaves today than at any time in human history
  • Types of modern slavery include: domestic servitude, forced crime, drug trade, benefit fraud, organ harvesting, forced marriage, sexual exploitation, and forced labour

There were also some local lessons:
  • Modern slavery can be found all over Derbyshire.
  • There are over 480 slaves estimated to be in Derbyshire
  • Slavery in Derbyshire can be found in prostitution, cannabis growing, domestic servitude, nail bars, car washes, agriculture, factories and more

The resources for prayer and reflection can be found here.
